Mornings here belong to the ocean. The wind is lightest at first light, the line-ups quietest, and the ten-minute ride down to the coast feels like the truest part of the day.
Sri Lanka’s south coast is one of the most generous stretches of surf anywhere — a string of beach breaks, reefs and points where every level is catered for within a short tuk-tuk of the Round House. The trick is knowing which break suits which surfer, and which tide.
For the first-timer
Weligama Bay, twenty minutes west, is the gentlest introduction: a long sandy beach break with surf schools lining the shore and forgiving whitewash that holds your hand while you learn. Kabalana and Mirissa also offer beginner-friendly corners on the right day.
For the confident
Kabalana — ‘The Rock’ — sits right on our doorstep and works across the tides, with a punchy reef peak alongside a softer beach option. Just east, Midigama hides the famous Lazy Left and Ram’s Right, while the breaks off Ahangama and Matara reward an early paddle with long, clean walls.

This season’s rates run roughly $35 for a 1.5-hour beginner lesson and $45 for advanced. Our team arranges everything — lessons, board hire, and a driver for dawn patrol — just let us know the night before.
